If for example your lightsource is pointing down, but the connection socket is sideways then you should use a G4 bulb with a side-pin.
In the other situation where the connection socket is pointing in the same direction as the light then you should use a bulb with a back-pin.
If you choose a G4 replacement which casts light in all directions, then you don't have to worry about the position of the connection pins.
