The Foshan Folk Art Research Institute was set up by the government in 1956, and the controlling company Foshan Folk Art & Culture Development Co., Ltd is a professional institute and company for protecting, researching, creating, manufacturing and trading Foshan traditional folk arts including paper-cut, scenery colored lantern, wood-block New-Year paintings and autumn color arts. We provide design service and we have arts and crafts masters in world and national level.Two works of group lanterns made by our great artists were collected in the Guinness World Records.

Foshan lion dance is a kind of Foshan traditional sports. Lion head is made of quality bamboo, paper craftwork, wool/plume/fake fur, microfabric, and so on. Foshan Lion Head production is originated from the Ming dynasty and in great prosperity in the Qing dynasty, which has existed more than 500 years. Legend of lion dance has it that in Ming dynasty, there was a one-horned in Foshan area, with big eyes and large mouth, and making special sound of "lian, lian", therefore, the people called it "Lian Beast". Lion head is mainly divided into three categories of literary lion head, military lion head and juvenile lion head. The literary lion head would be with facial features of Liu Bei or Guan Yu, performing in good and gentle manner; Military lion head would be with Zhang Fei as facial makeup, reflecting aggressive and brave character; Juvenile lion head is designed for children for playing with the lion head mask. Foshan Lion Head enjoys a long history of over 200 years, various categories, exquisite workmanship, humanoid masque, propitious designed patterns, and masterly decoration with folk style exaggerating color and delicate handicraft. Foshan Lion Head has become the folk arts and crafts with strong local characteristics, and is the master work combining the styles of Lingnan folk art and the eastern arts and crafts. Foshan Lion Head production processes are comprised of framework preparation, paper craftworks, color writing and assembly. Lion dance is one of the most outstanding elements of South China culture. Lion Head is the spirit prop of the dance show. With the bamboo made skeleton and paper made skin, the lion head reflecting the charm and spirit of human beings. Foshan handmade Lion Head is from Qing Dynasty, the exaggerated figure generated romantic and warm atmosphere in the Lion dance performance with the moral of luck and happiness. Foshan Lion Head with anthropomorphic image and auspicious pattern, is the representative of Lingnan folk art and oriental art and craft. Foshan Lion Head has been listed as the second batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage since the year of 2008. In our Foshan Folk Art Research Institute, there are one successor of Foshan Lion Head in National level and one successor in provincial level.
