Product Detail
BIR 800/450 is a combined Computed Tomography (CT) and Digital Radiography (DR) system.

BIR 800-450 is a Computed Tomography (CT) and Digital Radiography (DR) system capable of high

spatial resolution, density discrimination, flaw detection and reverse engineering (RE). CT images can be

obtained in either the Rotate Only (RO) mode, Asymmetric RO (ARO), or Continuous Rotate & Step

(CRS) mode. The system can be configured with multiple sources and detectors for maximum flexibility

to cover a wide range of applications. A standard configuration for automotive casting applications

consists of the following items:

• 450 kV x-ray system with Comet HP insert;

• 1024 channel, solid-state detector array;

• data acquisition system with 18 bit A/D converter;

• tungsten x-ray beam optics including precision source exit and detector slice width collimators;

• BIR Intel® Dual Xeon™ workstation, software, and flat panel color image displays;

• six-axis machine tool grade precision manipulator with linear servo drives;

• cabling, accessories, installation, training, and documentation;

• one year on-site warranty with two PM visits as detailed in Appendix A.

Varian CT systems are designed for x-ray inspection of automotive, aerospace, and industrial components over a wide range of density and materials including plastics, composites, light alloys, iron, and steel. The system produces cross sectional CT images and projection digital radiographs. In addition to density mapping, CT provides complete 3-D morphology of parts with highly accurate dimensioning capability.

CT also provides superior flaw detection capability of extremely small cracks, porosity and voids that are normally not visible with film radiography inspection. The 450 kV source is capable of producing excellent quality CT images through solid cylinders of aluminum at 225 mm diameter or steel at 80 mm diameter. This is equivalent to detecting voids of less than 1 mm diameter. Radiographic images through 300 mm of aluminum or 100 mm of steel can be produced at 450 kV.
